Microsoft has announced that its AI chatbot Copilot will stop working on WhatsApp starting January 15. After that date, users who want to keep using the chatbot must switch to the official Copilot mobile apps or access it through the web version.

The change comes as Microsoft complies with WhatsApp’s revised platform policies, which were introduced last month. Under the new rules, WhatsApp will no longer allow general-purpose AI chatbots to operate through its Business API. Meta says the API should instead be reserved for supporting businesses and customer service, not as a distribution platform for standalone AI bots.

This shift affects multiple AI companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity, and several others. OpenAI had already disclosed plans to close its WhatsApp integration in January, following the same policy change.

Microsoft also confirmed that chat history will not transfer to Copilot’s official apps because Copilot on WhatsApp was accessed without user authentication. As a result, conversations cannot be synced or migrated.

Users who want to keep records of their chats are advised to export their WhatsApp conversations before January 15 using WhatsApp’s built-in export tools.
