OpenAI has officially launched group chats for ChatGPT users worldwide across all plans, Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. The rollout follows a short regional pilot that included Japan and New Zealand.

The new feature allows multiple people to collaborate with each other and ChatGPT in one shared conversation. According to OpenAI, the update transforms ChatGPT from a one-on-one assistant into a collaborative space where friends, families, and teams can plan, create, debate, and make decisions together.

Group chats support up to 20 participants, each retaining their own private settings and memory. Users can start a group by tapping the people icon and adding members directly or by sharing an invite link. Everyone will be asked to set a short profile with their name, username, and photo. Importantly, adding someone to an existing chat creates a brand-new conversation, leaving the original thread untouched.

ChatGPT automatically knows when to contribute or stay silent, but participants can tag “ChatGPT” to prompt a response. The AI can also react to messages with emojis and reference profile photos for context.

OpenAI sees this launch as the beginning of a more social, collaborative version of ChatGPT. The company says future updates will make ChatGPT even more active in group settings, assisting with planning, research, creation, and decision-making.

The announcement arrives shortly after the release of GPT-5.1 and months after the launch of Sora, OpenAI’s social video-creation app. Together, these updates signal the company’s growing push into social, interactive AI experiences.
