Snap has unveiled Snap OS 2.0, the latest version of the software powering its augmented reality glasses, Snap Spectacles. The update brings a host of new features, including a native browser, WebXR support, and enhanced usability tools, as the company gears up for a consumer launch in 2026.

The rollout comes shortly before Meta’s Connect conference, where Snap’s biggest rival is expected to reveal new developments in AI and smart glasses technology.

Key updates in Snap OS 2.0 include:

  • Native browser improvements: faster page loading, optimized power usage, and a new interface with widgets, bookmarks, and a toolbar that supports both typing and voice input. Users can also resize windows like on a laptop.
  • WebXR support: enabling access to immersive AR experiences directly from WebXR-enabled sites.
  • Spotlight Lens: spatially overlays vertical video into the real world, letting users multitask, such as watching creator content while doing chores.
  • Gallery Lens: provides an interactive way to view, organize, and share captured Spectacles content.
  • Travel Mode: stabilizes AR visuals and tracking while on the move, whether in cars or airplanes.

Snap says the portrait field of view of its Spectacles is optimized for vertical video, making AR content feel more natural without needing to glance at a phone.

The software update follows Snap’s release of its fifth-generation Spectacles for developers in 2024, with plans to launch a consumer-ready version in 2026.
