If you’ve upgraded to a newer iPhone model recently, you’ve probably noticed Apple Intelligence showing up in core apps like Messages, Mail, and Notes. The platform, introduced in October 2024, marks Apple’s official leap into the generative AI race, competing with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Cupertino bills Apple Intelligence as “AI for the rest of us.” The system enhances existing features with text and image generation, offering tools like Writing Tools for summarizing and drafting messages, Genmoji for custom emojis, and Image Playground for creating visuals. Siri also received a facelift, now featuring onscreen awareness and deeper cross-app functionality.

However, a fully overhauled Siri, expected at WWDC 2025, was delayed after internal builds proved too error-prone to ship. Apple SVP Craig Federighi confirmed that a more personal, context-aware Siri is still in development and will be unveiled in 2026.

Apple also announced Visual Intelligence, which enables image-based search, and Live Translation for real-time conversation translations. Both features are expected to roll out with iOS 26 later in 2025.

The first wave of Apple Intelligence arrived via iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, limited to newer devices like iPhone 15 Pro models, iPhone 16 series, and M1 Macs. A second wave in iOS 18.2 expanded to Genmoji, Image Playground, and ChatGPT integration.

Apple Intelligence’s unique small-model approach allows many tasks to run on-device, boosting privacy and reducing reliance on cloud processing. For more complex queries, Apple routes through its new Private Cloud Compute, promising security levels equivalent to its consumer hardware.

Partnerships are also shaping Apple’s AI play. ChatGPT support launched with iOS 18.2, supplementing Siri and Writing Tools. Paid ChatGPT accounts retain access to premium features. Apple has hinted Google Gemini could be next.

At WWDC 2025, Apple also announced Foundation Models, allowing developers to integrate AI into apps without cloud APIs. For example, apps like Kahoot could generate quizzes from notes directly on-device.

Apple’s biggest challenge remains Siri. With competitors rapidly iterating, a next-generation version of the assistant is now pushed to 2026, and Apple may need outside help to close the gap.
