At its fall hardware event on Tuesday, Amazon introduced the newest Kindle Scribe alongside its first-ever color Kindle Scribe, both equipped with new AI-powered features for reading and note-taking.

The new Kindle Scribe comes with an 11-inch glare-free display, measures just 5.4mm thick, and weighs 400g. It’s 40% faster when writing or turning pages and includes texture-molded glass for a more paper-like writing experience. Powered by a new quad-core chip, additional memory, and Amazon’s latest Oxide display technology, it promises smoother performance.

Two versions will be available:

  • With front light: $499.99, launching later this year in the U.S.
  • Without front light: $429.99, arriving early next year.

Meanwhile, the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft debuts Amazon’s first color e-ink display, designed to produce soft, eye-friendly colors unlike traditional LCDs. It also features a new rendering engine for faster, more natural writing and promises weeks of battery life. Colorsoft will be available starting at $629.99.

AI and Creative Features

Both devices bring enhanced AI and creative tools:

  • Handwritten notes with AI summaries: Users can search notes across notebooks and receive simple AI-generated summaries.
  • Alexa+ integration (coming next year): Send notes and documents to Alexa+ for deeper conversations.
  • Story So Far: A reading feature that summarizes the book’s progress so far.
  • Ask This Book: Lets readers highlight text and ask spoiler-free questions about characters, motives, or scenes.
  • Artistic tools (Colorsoft only): New shader tool for smooth gradients, plus writing and highlighting options in 10 pen colors and five highlighter shades.

Amazon says these features will roll out to the Kindle iOS app later this year and to Kindle devices early next year.
