X has launched a new marketplace that allows Premium subscribers to request or purchase inactive usernames. The feature offers both free and paid options, depending on the handle’s rarity.

“Priority” handles, such as full names or multi-word phrases,  can be requested for free by Premium+ and Premium Business users. Once approved, the handle is transferred to them, but if they cancel their subscription, it reverts after 30 days.

Meanwhile, “Rare” handles, short, generic, or culturally significant names, will be sold through exclusive drops or direct invitations. Prices range from $2,500 to over a million dollars.

The move could boost X’s revenue and increase Premium subscriptions as ad revenue continues to decline. X says the marketplace ensures a fair process and helps prevent bots from hoarding desirable usernames.
