IBM and AMD have announced a partnership to develop next-generation computing architectures that combine IBM’s quantum systems with AMD’s AI-focused chips. The collaboration comes as both companies look to regain ground in the tech race after trailing behind competitors during the generative AI boom.

The joint effort aims to create a commercially viable quantum computing framework that is both scalable and open source, making it accessible to researchers and developers. According to IBM, the architecture could help tackle complex challenges in areas such as drug and materials discovery, logistics, and optimization.

“Quantum computing will simulate the natural world and represent information in an entirely new way,” said IBM chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna. “By exploring how quantum computers from IBM and the advanced high-performance compute technologies of AMD can work together, we will build a powerful hybrid model that pushes past the limits of traditional computing.”

The partnership underscores the growing momentum around hybrid quantum-classical computing, which many experts see as a critical step toward unlocking the full potential of quantum technology.
