Google is bringing its Gemini AI to Google Maps in India, introducing hands-free assistance, contextual navigation suggestions, and localized information about routes and places.

The AI integration, which debuted in the U.S., will roll out to Android and iOS users across India in the coming weeks, supporting nine Indian languages.

Miriam Daniel, Vice President and Head of Google Maps, said the update required deep localization:

“When we say localizing for India, it’s not just the language. It’s also adapting to how Indians use the product, how they ask questions, how they identify places… everything is different in India.”

In addition to Gemini, Google is launching several India-specific features aimed at improving road safety and commuting:

  • Accident-prone stretch alerts: Drivers will get visual and audio warnings in areas with high accident rates. The feature will first launch in Gurugram, Hyderabad (Cyberabad region), Chandigarh, and Faridabad.
  • Real-time road data: Google is partnering with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to access data on road closures, diversions, and repairs, and to display amenities like restrooms, restaurants, and fuel stations along national highways.
  • Proactive disruption notifications: Users will get alerts about major delays or route changes even when not actively navigating, starting in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
  • Speed limits display: Maps will now show speed limits in Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Noida.
  • Flyover voice guidance: Building on the flyover navigation feature launched last year, Google is adding voice support for better driving clarity.

The rollout comes as Google faces scrutiny in India over navigation accuracy following a tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh last year. Anal Ghosh, Senior Program Manager for Google Maps, emphasized the need for driver awareness:

“Maps can’t be accurate 100% of the time… we encourage users to keep their eyes on the road.”
