Meta is cutting around 600 jobs from its superintelligence lab, according to an internal memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, as reported by Axios.
The move is part of the company’s continued restructuring under CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” initiative, aimed at making Meta leaner and more focused.
“By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” Wang told employees in his memo.
Meta, which confirmed the accuracy of the report to TechCrunch, has been heavily investing in artificial intelligence to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Over the summer, the company made headlines for offering multi-million dollar packages to recruit over 50 AI researchers from rival firms.
While the cuts signal a shift in strategy, Meta says that most affected employees may be reassigned within the company rather than permanently laid off.
