X has announced an expansion of its closed beta for its new pay-per-use API plan, inviting more developers to participate in the program. The company said applications are now open for both new and experienced developers looking to build apps on the platform.
According to X’s updated API pricing page, developers will soon be charged based on the type of request they make, including reading data, creating posts, sending DMs, viewing trends, or fetching bookmarks. A built-in calculator helps estimate total costs, marking a major shift from the previous flat-tier pricing model.
The pay-per-use system eliminates monthly tier caps and aims to provide developers with greater flexibility compared to the older plans. It’s not yet clear whether X intends to phase out its existing tier-based pricing, which includes the $200 Basic, $5,000 Pro, and $42,000 Enterprise plans.
The new model comes two years after X blocked third-party clients and ended free API access, moves that drew criticism from smaller developers. The company later introduced top-up packs for those exceeding their plan limits, but the cost still proved prohibitive for many.

With this new usage-based structure, X hopes to attract back developers who left after the API overhaul, particularly those building tools and integrations that rely on the social platform’s data.
