Walmart announced on Tuesday a new partnership with OpenAI that will let customers shop for Walmart products directly through ChatGPT, including groceries (excluding fresh food), household items, and other essentials.
Through the integration, shoppers can browse, plan meals, restock essentials, and discover new items while chatting with the AI. A “Buy” button in ChatGPT’s app will let customers instantly check out after linking their Walmart accounts. The feature will also support third-party sellers when it launches later this fall.
According to Walmart, the collaboration will help the company predict and personalize customer needs, transforming online shopping from a reactive to a proactive experience.
The partnership follows OpenAI’s expansion into e-commerce, where it plans to offer agentic shopping tools for product discovery, recommendations, and payments, initially partnering with Etsy and Shopify sellers.
In addition to this collaboration, Walmart is investing in its own AI assistant, Sparky, which helps users discover, compare, and purchase products. The retailer plans to expand Sparky’s capabilities to include reordering, service booking, and multimodal interactions via text, images, audio, and video.
Walmart already uses OpenAI technology internally through ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI Certifications, and has integrated AI to speed up fashion production and improve customer service efficiency.
“There is a native AI experience coming that is multimedia, personalized, and contextual,” said Walmart CEO Doug McMillon. “We are running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships, including this important step with OpenAI.”
