Apple is officially retiring Clips, its short-form video creation app launched in 2017. The company has removed Clips from the App Store and confirmed that it will no longer receive updates, signaling the end of an app once positioned as Apple’s playful answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories.
According to a support page on Apple’s website, new users can no longer download Clips as of October 10, while existing users can continue using the app on current or earlier versions of iOS and iPadOS. Those who already have the app can also re-download it from their Apple account if needed.
Apple is encouraging users to save their videos, with or without the app’s signature filters and effects, to their photo library, since the lack of updates will likely make the app harder to use over time.

Initially, Clips allowed users to stitch together photos and videos with filters, emojis, and music, offering a lightweight alternative to social platforms without the pressure of posting publicly. However, after an initial burst of updates, the app’s development slowed, with recent years bringing little more than minor bug fixes.
The decision hasn’t surprised many Apple fans. On Reddit, users admitted they’d either forgotten Clips existed or never tried it at all. Once designed to help users tell short, creative stories, the app now feels outdated in an era dominated by AI video tools like OpenAI’s Sora, which recently surpassed 1 million downloads.
After seven years, Apple seems ready to quietly close the curtain on Clips, a reminder that even in Cupertino, not every experiment sticks.
