YouTube is introducing a new timer feature to help users control how much time they spend watching Shorts. The feature lets users set a daily limit for Shorts viewing in the app’s settings. Once the limit is reached, a pop-up appears notifying them that scrolling is paused, though users can dismiss it if they wish.
This new tool reflects growing concerns about social media’s addictive nature and YouTube’s effort to promote digital well-being without drastically cutting engagement.
The feature, spotted earlier this year by Android Authority, is not yet integrated with parental controls. YouTube says parental management options will be added next year, preventing kids from dismissing time-limit prompts.

YouTube already offers “Take a Break” and “Bedtime” reminders, allowing users to pause viewing after set intervals or during specific times. The Shorts timer adds another layer to these features as lawsuits mount in the U.S., with families and school districts accusing social media platforms of designing addictive features that harm young users.
