WhatsApp is rolling out a new text-based status update feature that works much like Instagram Notes, allowing users to share short updates that appear at the top of chats and on their profile.

The feature, called “About”, is technically not new, WhatsApp notes it was the app’s first-ever feature before private messaging became its main purpose. Now, Meta is bringing it back with more visibility and interactivity.

Users can post quick updates about what they’re doing, signal why they may be unavailable, or spark conversations. These short texts will appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on user profiles, and anyone can tap an About status to reply directly.

Like Instagram Notes, the About status disappears after 24 hours by default, though users can choose shorter or longer durations. Visibility controls also let people decide whether their status is seen only by contacts or by a wider audience.

The updated feature is more limited than Instagram Notes, it doesn’t yet support music sharing or looping videos,  but WhatsApp says more enhancements could come depending on adoption.

The About status update feature begins rolling out on mobile devices this week.
