Google has released its annual Year in Search report, highlighting the biggest trending searches of 2025 and offering a look at what captured global curiosity this year. Unlike the most commonly searched terms, which would include everyday queries like “weather,” this report focuses on searches that saw significant spikes in interest compared to 2024.

Leading the global trends was “Gemini,” Google’s AI chatbot, which topped the list as the year’s most searched rising topic. It was followed by “India vs England’’, a major cricket matchup, and “Charlie Kirk.” Another AI bot, DeepSeek, also made the top rankings, coming in seventh.

In the news category, Charlie Kirk dominated again, with “Charlie Kirk assassination” ranking as the top trending news query of 2025. “Iran” and “US Government Shutdown” followed in second and third place.

Food trends were also a major highlight. The sweet-spicy condiment hot honey was the most searched recipe of the year, with Marry Me Chicken and chimichurri completing the top three.

Movies that grabbed global attention included “Anora” in the top spot, followed by “Superman” and the upcoming “Minecraft Movie.”
For actors, Mikey Madison, star of Anora, was the top trending name, while Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts) and Isabela Merced (Superman) ranked second and third.

Sports fans also contributed heavily to search spikes. The FIFA Club World Cup was the year’s top trending sports event, beating the Asia Cup and ICC Champions Trophy. The most searched sports team was Paris Saint-Germain F.C., followed by S.L. Benfica and the Toronto Blue Jays.
