A bill to establish the Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre in Ekiti State has successfully passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate. Sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu (APC – Ekiti South), the proposed centre will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, including robotics and data science. Its primary goals are to advance research and innovation, promote skills development among young Nigerians, and position the country as a leader in digital solutions for both local and national challenges.
The centre is designed to foster collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector, supporting local employment, entrepreneurship, and homegrown digital solutions. It forms part of a broader strategy to drive digital transformation and economic growth in Nigeria’s technology sector.
Functioning as a research and training hub, the centre will connect government, industry, and academic institutions, with a focus on equipping young Nigerians with valuable digital and AI-based skills. Its establishment is expected to drive innovation and economic development in the South-West region and across the country.
The centre is planned to serve as a national platform for developing indigenous digital solutions addressing challenges in agriculture, health, education, and public service delivery. It will also provide opportunities for Nigerian youths to compete globally in AI and technology, reducing reliance on imported technologies.

Following the second reading, the bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation for further legislative action, with a report expected within four weeks.
