Dating app Hinge has introduced a new moderation policy that stops short of banning users for a single violation. Instead, the platform will now flag specific pieces of content that break its rules, while keeping the user’s profile live but hidden from the discovery feed until the issue is fixed.

Users will be notified of flagged content via email, push notification, and an in-app message explaining the violation and prompting them to update their profiles.

The types of content subject to flagging include material that:

  • Is offensive, pornographic, violent, or discriminatory
  • Promotes illegal activities or harmful behaviour
  • Attempts to sell services or promote businesses
  • Displays images of others without consent, including minors without parental or guardian approval

Hinge says the update is aimed at giving users clearer guidelines while maintaining safety on the platform.

“By giving daters the opportunity to update their content while remaining in good standing on Hinge, we’re delivering on our commitment to greater transparency and helping well-intentioned users better understand our policies, so they can stay focused on what matters most: making meaningful connections,” said Jeff Dunn, chief risk officer at Hinge.

However, the company emphasized that repeated violations will still result in permanent account bans.
