LG Uplus, one of South Korea’s largest telecom operators, has confirmed it reported a suspected data breach to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). The company did not specify when the results of the investigation would be made public.

The report makes LG Uplus the third major South Korean telecom provider, after SK Telecom and KT Telecom, to face cybersecurity incidents in the past six months. South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said its ongoing investigation into KT and LG Uplus, launched last month, is still in progress.

In July, KISA detected signs of a potential hack and urged LG Uplus to submit a formal report. The company initially denied any breach, even as KT disclosed user data exposure linked to unauthorized micro base stations.

Hackers reportedly from China or North Korea were said to have compromised nearly 9,000 LG Uplus servers, according to hacking magazine Phrack.

The breach adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting telecoms, credit card companies, tech startups, and government agencies in South Korea. Experts warn that the country’s fragmented cybersecurity structure and lack of trained professionals continue to weaken its defenses against rising cyber threats.
