OpenAI is expanding its retail footprint, with Target set to launch a new ChatGPT-powered shopping app in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes shortly after OpenAI introduced its first wave of dedicated retail apps inside ChatGPT, partnering with brands such as Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. The move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to drive AI-powered commerce, including features like Instant Checkout that let users shop and pay directly within conversations with retailers like Etsy and Shopify.

Target’s new ChatGPT app will launch in beta next week, offering shoppers the ability to:

  • Ask for shopping ideas
  • Browse products
  • Build multi-item shopping baskets
  • Shop for groceries
  • Check out directly within ChatGPT

The partnership also strengthens OpenAI’s enterprise relationship with Target. The retail giant plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across 18,000 headquarters employees, supporting tasks such as supply chain forecasting and operational improvements.
