OpenAI has introduced a group chat feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate directly inside the app. The feature is currently in pilot testing across select regions, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, and is available to Free, Plus, and Team users on both mobile and web.
The company says the pilot aims to understand how people use shared conversations within ChatGPT, describing the rollout as a “small first step” toward building a more collaborative, social experience in the app. Early testers will be asked to provide feedback before the feature expands more widely.
OpenAI emphasized that private chats and personal memory remain fully private. Group chats are invitation-only, and users can leave anytime. Most participants can remove others, though the chat creator can only exit voluntarily. For users under 18, content filters and enhanced parental protections are applied.
Starting a group is simple: tap the people icon, then add members directly or via a link. Groups can include 1 to 20 participants. Adding someone to an existing chat creates a new group automatically, preserving the original conversation. Each group has its own mini-profile and organized sidebar placement.
Inside group chats, ChatGPT behaves just like in regular conversations, but now with multiple people. GPT-5.1 Auto powers responses and supports search, image generation, file uploads, dictation, and more. ChatGPT’s usage limits apply only when the AI replies, not when humans message each other.

ChatGPT has also gained new social awareness: it knows when to jump into discussions or stay quiet unless tagged. Users can tag “ChatGPT” for direct responses, and the AI can now react with emojis or generate personalized images using group members’ profile photos.
This feature marks another step toward OpenAI evolving from a pure AI assistant into a more social platform. In September, the company launched Sora 2, a standalone social app with a TikTok-style feed for sharing AI-generated videos, algorithmic recommendations, parental controls, and private messaging.
