OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser designed to redefine how people search and interact online. Rolling out first on macOS, with support for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon, Atlas will be available to all free users at launch.
The browser integrates ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience, allowing users to chat with their search results and perform web tasks through “agent mode.” This feature enables ChatGPT to automate simple browser actions on the user’s behalf.
According to OpenAI’s product lead Adam Fry, ChatGPT Atlas will include a sidecar feature that gives the chatbot contextual awareness of whatever’s on screen, eliminating the need to copy and paste information. It will also include a “browser history” function to personalize responses based on visited sites.

The browser market is becoming increasingly competitive as AI features transform how users work and search online. OpenAI joins a growing list of players, including Google, Microsoft, and startups like Perplexity, who are integrating generative AI into web browsers.
Whether ChatGPT Atlas can challenge Google Chrome’s 3 billion users remains uncertain, but it signals OpenAI’s intent to become a major player in the AI-powered browsing revolution.
