OpenAI is rolling out a major update to ChatGPT’s voice experience, allowing users to access ChatGPT Voice directly inside their chat window instead of switching to a separate interface.

Previously, voice conversations took place on a dedicated screen with an animated blue circle, a mute button, a live video option, and an exit icon. During that experience, users could hear ChatGPT’s responses but couldn’t view them as text in real time, making it inconvenient if you missed something.

With the new design, users can now speak to ChatGPT and watch responses appear instantly as text, while also seeing visuals the assistant shares, such as images, maps, or references. You can even scroll back to review earlier messages without leaving voice mode.

The update aims to make ChatGPT feel more natural and seamless, letting users switch fluidly between talking and typing. However, you’ll still need to tap “End” when you want to stop the voice conversation and return fully to text-only interaction.

This revamped voice mode is now the default and is rolling out across both web and mobile versions of ChatGPT.

For anyone who prefers the original experience, OpenAI has added a new option in Settings → Voice Mode called “Separate mode,” which brings back the classic isolated voice interface.
