Apple is shelving plans to overhaul its Vision Pro VR headset as it shifts focus toward developing AI-powered smart glasses, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The tech giant had been working on a cheaper, lighter version of the Vision Pro but has reassigned staff from that project to accelerate work on smart glasses, seen as a more competitive frontier against Meta.
Bloomberg reports Apple is currently developing two versions of smart glasses. The first, codenamed N50, will pair with an iPhone but won’t have its own display. Apple could unveil the device as early as 2026 and release it by 2027.
The second model will feature a display, positioning it as a direct rival to Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses, which debuted last month. While Apple initially aimed for a 2028 release, the company is now fast-tracking development.

Despite the shift, Apple remains behind Meta, which entered the smart glasses market in 2021 and has already launched multiple iterations. Still, Apple’s move signals its intent to establish a foothold in the growing AI wearables market.
