OpenAI has announced that Indian users who sign up starting November 4 will get a free one-year ChatGPT Go plan, as part of a limited promotion aimed at expanding its presence in one of its top markets.

Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India are also eligible for the free 12-month offer, though OpenAI didn’t specify when the promotion will end.

Priced below $5 per month, ChatGPT Go first launched in India in August as OpenAI’s most affordable paid plan before expanding to other Asian countries. The plan offers 10x more usage than the free version, better memory, and support for file uploads and image generation.

India, one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, has over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers. Despite its massive user base, monetization remains a challenge,    with ChatGPT generating just $3.6 million in in-app purchases in India over a three-month period.

The company is expected to unveil more India-focused announcements during its DevDay Exchange conference in Bengaluru on November 4.

Rival AI companies like Perplexity and Google are also targeting India’s booming user base with free or discounted AI subscriptions, signaling a growing competition in the region’s AI market.
