OpenAI has unveiled its biggest step yet toward an AI-driven internet. During its annual Dev Day, the company introduced a new system that lets users access apps like Spotify, Figma, Uber, and Target directly within ChatGPT, no separate windows or tabs needed.
The new integration follows last week’s launch of Instant Checkout, OpenAI’s payment system that connects to platforms like Shopify, Etsy, and Stripe. Together, these tools position ChatGPT as a powerful center for AI-based commerce, a place where customers can buy, book, or order anything without leaving the chat.
The platform’s upcoming partners show the scale of the vision: ChatGPT will soon be able to call cabs through Uber, order food from DoorDash, book travel on Expedia, and even arrange home services through Thumbtack.
Industry analysts say this move could reshape online shopping, giving OpenAI a chance to compete not just with Google and Anthropic, but also retail giants like Amazon and Walmart. By facilitating purchases and recommending products, ChatGPT could take a share of transactions made through its platform, similar to how an app store operates.
Competitors are already responding. Adobe predicts that this year’s holiday shopping will be dominated by AI-assisted purchases, while Mastercard calls this new phase “agentic commerce.” Google, meanwhile, has launched its own protocol, AP2, to power AI-driven buying.

Still, one big question remains: will shoppers embrace AI shopping agents? While the technology promises convenience and speed, it’s yet to be seen whether consumers will trust chatbots to manage their purchases.
