Instagram is experimenting with a new Reels-first interface in India and South Korea, reshaping how users interact with the platform.

The redesigned layout mirrors the look of Instagram’s recently launched iPad app, placing Stories at the top while shifting the direct message (DM) button to the center of the navigation bar. The Reels tab now takes the second spot, with users able to swipe between tabs for easier navigation.

The update also introduces a new Following tab, which offers three feed options:

  • All: Recommended posts and reels from accounts you follow
  • Friends: Content from mutual connections
  • Latest: The most recent posts and reels

While the test is currently limited, Instagram confirmed plans to expand the redesign globally.

The move reflects Meta’s growing focus on short-form video. The company recently reported that Instagram crossed 3 billion monthly active users, attributing much of its growth to the popularity of Reels. According to Meta, short videos are reshared 4.5 billion times across its platforms, driving deeper engagement.

By placing Reels and DMs at the center of its interface, Instagram is doubling down on the content formats fueling its fastest growth.
