WhatsApp is adding a new AI-powered feature called “Writing Help” that helps users polish or reframe their messages, Meta announced on Wednesday.

The tool allows users to rephrase, proofread, or adjust the tone of a message, offering AI-generated suggestions that can make text more professional, supportive, or even funny.

Importantly, the feature is powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read the original message or the AI-generated rewrites. This means conversations remain end-to-end private even when users rely on the tool.

To demonstrate, WhatsApp showcased an example where the message “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa” was rewritten in several humorous ways, including: “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”

With this launch, WhatsApp appears to be encouraging users to rely on its in-app AI rather than turning to external writing tools like ChatGPT. However, reactions may be mixed: while some will welcome the ability to fine-tune messages on the fly, others may see AI-generated rewrites as inauthentic for personal conversations with friends and family.

Users can access Writing Help by tapping the new pencil icon that appears while drafting a message in the app.
