Born, a Berlin-based AI gaming startup, has raised a $15 million Series A to expand its vision of social AI companions that foster real-world connections. The round, led by Accel with participation from Tencent and Laton Ventures, brings Born’s total funding to $25 million.

The company’s flagship app, Pengu, lets users co-parent and play with a generative AI-powered pet, a mix of Tamagotchi and Neopets with a collaborative twist. With over 15 million global users, Pengu aims to turn companionship into a shared project, encouraging interaction between friends and partners rather than isolating individuals with one-on-one AI chatbots.

Born, formerly known as Slay, grew out of its founders’ belief that AI companions should be fun, social, and relationship-enhancing. CEO Fabian Kamberi says the model is about “shared experiences that strengthen real-world bonds,” countering the loneliness-driven design of many chatbot apps.

With the new funding, Born plans to:

  • Introduce new AI characters in Pengu, including a learning-focused companion.
  • Launch a stealth AI social product for users aged 16–21 that delivers “culturally relevant” AI companions, capable of sharing TikToks and Reels.
  • Open a New York office for marketing and AI research, led by head of finance Enrico Dal Re.

The company relies on OpenAI’s models but has built safety layers to protect younger users. Kamberi says the goal is to move beyond today’s chatbot paradigm and create network-driven AI social experiences.

Accel partner Luca Bocchio said Born’s approach could define a new category: “We’ve been really impressed by the team’s ability to develop chart-topping apps and their inspiring product vision, and we’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with them as they scale globally.”
