Google has officially launched a new feature for its command-line AI system, Gemini CLI, that allows third-party companies to integrate directly into the product. The feature, called Gemini CLI Extensions, debuted on Wednesday with integrations from Figma, Stripe, and other partners.

The move comes just days after OpenAI unveiled its own app integrations for ChatGPT. However, unlike OpenAI’s curated approach, Gemini CLI’s extensions can be published freely without Google’s approval or endorsement. Developers can host extensions publicly on GitHub and install them manually.

“That open ecosystem is vital to us,” said Taylor Mullen, a senior staff engineer on the project. “Everything we’re doing is grounded in a fair ecosystem that anyone can participate in.”

The first available extension connects Gemini CLI to Google’s Nanobanana image generator, enabling users to generate images directly from the terminal.

Since its launch in June, Gemini CLI has surpassed one million users, with most being software developers. Google says the tool is widely used internally to build and maintain its own codebase.

According to Ryan J. Salva, Google’s senior director of product management for developer tools, the new feature is designed to turn Gemini CLI into “an extensibility platform, a conduit to other tools and instructions that come from elsewhere in your tool chain.”
